Startup School 2006 Notes

Startup and business No Comments »

Last month, when I was at Stanford U. for Startup School, I took notes with the -real- intention to publish them here on my blog. However, I’ve been so busy (or so lazy?) that I didn’t get a chance to edit them. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I thought it would be nice to post notes from other people here, instead (since I’m pretty sure I’ll never edit my notes anyway!).

I’ll try to update this post when I come across interesting stuff about the event.

Now official: my company got acquired!

As of May 15, 2006, my company AdonisTech Corporation got acquired by a consultant firm from the Montreal, Quebec area. I am quite happy with this and I’m convinced that their vision, projects, energy and extensive expertise will benefit the customers as well as the company. As for myself, I am starting a new Internet startup… I just can’t help it!

A message to Bill: Apple is coming right at you!

I’m quietly sitting at Starbucks in Montreal. The place is just PACKED! I mean, about 20 customers had to have coffee in their cars…

As soon as I walked in the door, something struck me: 5 people are using laptops (they’re not related). 4 of those laptops are Macs, and only 1 is a PC! This is something I have never seen before, especially not in Montreal where Macs have never been really popular.

What does that mean? Apple is rapidly gaining serious market shares. Microsoft (and all PC makers) should really start worrying and come up with an offensive strategy to slow down this trend. Darn! Even I, a long time PC user and Windows die-hard, has switched to OS X!

This switch is fairly recent so I am not a Steve Jobs worshipper yet. While I think Macs and OS X are pretty nice, they are far from perfect. MacBook Pros sure keep your laps warm and Firefox crashed earlier tonight. However, the simplicity of the OS makes me love my new computer.

Innovation and simplicity are what drive users. Unfortunately, what I have seen from Vista isn’t what I consider “innovation”, and worrying about not being infected by a virus is not simple. Microsoft must wake up before I tell my mom to get a Mac!
