1passwd: A better RoboForm for Mac OS X

Technology Add comments

One of the things I missed the most since I moved to OS X from XP was RoboForm. For those of you who don’t know what RoboForm is, it’s an advanced password manager for Internet Explorer and Firefox. It saves (and encrypts) your passwords on disk, handles multiple accounts per website and so on. (Yes, it is -much- better than what’s built in Firefox!) Having account at so many websites, RoboForm is something I could barely live without. Unfortunately, RoboForm is for Windows only and they have no plan for a Mac version anytime soon.

Life was hard until the day I found out about a new Mac application called 1passwd. It is similar to RoboForm, but SO MUCH BETTER! First of all, it is very lightweight (ie: not bloated) and extremely easy to use. However, the best thing about 1passwd is surely the team behind it. They quickly reply to e-mail inquiries, and take user suggestions very seriously. In fact, they implemented -all- my suggestions within one week! That’s including the most important one, being able to import my Roboform “Passcards”.
1passwd seemlessly integrates with OS X’s keychain and currently supports Safari and Firefox. It also comes with a standalone software to manage your different accounts at different websites. Another great thing about it is that it can generate random passwords for you.

Even if they are still in Beta (everbody is, I guess), their product is seems very reliable. I do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone serious about keeping their passwords safe. If you download the beta now, they’ll even give you a discount code for purchasing the final version! So, there’s no reason not to try it out (and not to switch to OS X :) )!

    Carl,

I am not finding 1passwd as easy to use as Roboform…

First I miss the Logins dropdown unless I am not looking for it in the right place. Please let me know if that’s the case.

The other biggie for me was Safenotes, but I thought I saw something in Mac named SafeNotes - can’t find it now.

Love the Mac! just need to get Roboform replaced. Thanks for any help you can offer. I haven’t looked for another Roboform replacement for Mac yet.

  3. Carl Says:

    Tom,

Not sure what you don’t find intuitive about 1passwd. It is pretty straightforward! Check out the video demo at http://1passwd.com/

  4. TomDavid Says:

This product “looks” more logical (http://www.xheadsoftware.com/info_xhead.asp). Did you try it?

The big thing I see with 1pass that’s missing is a pull-down “list” of the logins. Having to search for them does not seem so intuitive to me.

  5. Carl Says:

If you’re using Firefox 2.0, download the lastest version of 1passwd. They fixed a little glitch that occured only in 2.0. Also, make sure you either add the toolbar to your Firefox, or add the 1passwd button. You’re clearly not using the app properly. Once you do, you’ll fall in love!

  6. TomDavid Says:

If you recall from the Roboform toolbar there is a “Logins” drop-down. I am not seeing that with 1pass.

It seems I need to “open” from the 1passwd drop-down and search for the login. That seems unnecessary.

Is there still something I am not seeing?

  7. Carl Says:

There’s definitely something you are doing wrong. Watch the video, read the manual and e-mail their support team. I’m sure it will help you.

  8. TomDavid Says:

    OK, thanks.

  9. Dave Teare Says:

TomDavid is right; in the current version of 1Passwd we don’t have a feature that shows all your logins for the current site on the toolbar; nor do we have a feature that will show all your logins like RoboForm’s bookmarks.

In the upcoming release, however, we are addressing the issue of bookmarks. We will be adding this feature, and when you see how it integrates with Quick Silver I think you’ll love it!

Oh - btw, the next release has SafeNotes too. It is a huge release.

    Now THAT’S customer service!!

  11. Mark C Says:

Thanks, I have been thinking about switching to Mac OS X and Roboform is one of the great programs I can’t live without.

Another reason to ditch Windows XP!

  12. Mac Newbie Says:

Better? Not even NEAR as good. Wait for the new cross platform version form Roboform!

  13. James Says:

    Dude,

I just can’t get my head around 1passwd. I tried it for a couple of weeks and I hated every moment of it.

Hell, I had to upgrade to a newer version of the application to actually uninstall it!

Roboform is… an amazing program. In fact it’s pretty much the only thing I really miss from XP. That, and decent a/v codec support.

I’m definately a Mac convert - but I’d be the first in line to buy Roboform if they released it.

  14. TomDavid Says:

Well, as I said before the 1Passwd people are doing a good job at customer support, BUT I’m “still” having a hard time making the mental transision from ROBOFORM. I just sent a message to ask them if they plan to release a Mac version… hope the answer is what I want to hear. Roboform is awesome and getting better (for the PC).

  15. TomDavid Says:

Well, Roboform says no native Mac version is planned, but it does run in “Parallels Desktop”.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  16. Arnie Says:

    Okay,
So nice to see these posts. I was just at the Apple store and spent some time getting to know the Mac. I am really excited about making the switch early next year.

Funny as it seems I feel the same as the rest of you, life without Roboform! Noooo! Hundreds of dollars and all the programs I own for PC I am worried about this one. Man I love that program and company. I have used it and recommended it numerous times.

I sent a letter to Roboform just a minute ago inquiring about a Macintosh version. I am disappointed to here the reply you received TomDavid. Maybe with enough inquiries they may take another look at it.

  17. RoboForm Addict Says:

I have to cast my lot with the “RoboForm is still MUCH better than 1passwd” group. Admittedly, 1passwd is obviously not as mature and time-proven as RoboForm, but I personally find it much less powerful, flexible, intuitive and manageable than RF. I have 1passwd (and bought a license), but I just can’t shake my RF jones. RF is literally the one and only remaining program that is preventing me from making the final no-looking-back leap to OS-X. I use RF probably a hundred times a day, and I just can’t live without it… (Thank gawd for Parallels!)

  18. John Says:

Dude, you’re completely stoned if you think 1pw is better than RoboForm.. it lacks so many features, and the UI is no where near as accessible… Im working on both Mac and PC, i would like to work more on Mac but Roboform is a part of my secure banking internet experience that no other software can touch at the moment.. 1pw is usable, it just doesnt compare… Im guessing your a mac only guy so that’s why it’s better, cuz there is no roboform mac.

  19. Carl Says:

    John,

I’ve been using Windows almost all my life, and I am quite new to the Mac (less than 1 year). What feature are you missing from Roboform? I find 1passwd to be just as good, if not better… perhaps because I was just using a limited set of feature from Roboform. For me, it gets the job done, and very well!

  20. TomDavid Says:

Well, it’s good to see others “pinging” RF to cough up a Mac version.

I travel with a Mac (without parrallels), but have RF “portable” with me. I bought a copy of 1pw, but just can’t make the mental switch. I still enjoy RF on my PC and it is the last PC program I just “can’t live without”. Planning to get another Mac with parrallels soon and say goodbye to the PC, but still hoping there is a RF for Mac coming.

If RF does not think there is a market for a Mac version let’s put a group together and make RF an offer to fund the Mac build - might be a profitable investment.

Hey guys! This is a great conversation going on here; I’ll need to subscribe to the comments. We’re constantly improving 1Passwd and love getting your feedback. You can join us in the forum to have a cleaner conversation.

Anyway, version 2.3 of 1Passwd was released last night and has the missing features most RoboForm users wanted, including folders and direct access to “Go & Fill” your webforms without needing the launch the main 1Passwd application. Here’s a post about the new 2.3 release.

Please let us know what you think and help us set the priorities for the future versions.

    Cheers!
