I was playing with my iPhone last night and got this interesting error message:

What’s so interesting about it you ask? Well, the iPhone is exclusive on AT&T in the USA.
No T-Mobile deal has been announced in the US yet, and it’s likely that the Jesus Phone won’t “officially” be available on T-Mobile anytime soon given the 5 year exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T.
Is there something we don’t know about this exclusivity agreement? 5 years equals forever in technology; I’d be very surprised if Apple signed something like that.
One thing is for sure, Apple seems pretty ready for T-Mobile… I wonder what AT&T’s management will think of that. Hmmm.

Paul Graham just posted a very insightful essay on his site about The Future of Web Startups.
I found his sixth point (Startup Hubs will Persist) particularly interesting. Having been in the Valley for a while, and now being in Montreal, I think I realize how important startup hubs are more than most people here. If you argue that building a successful company outside of the Valley is just “as easy” as in Montreal, I invite you to read Paul’s article.
Just to clarify, I’m not saying that it’s impossible to succeed in Montreal. I know quite a few people who will likely succeed here, but nothing quite matches walking down University Ave. or going to private semi-famous founders parties.
And if you agree with me, read the essay anyways, it’s good.
